It
is not necessary to have the best photographs in the world to work from, but
it helps to have an in focus photo and a naturally light subject.
Flashlight photo's sometimes lead to a loss of detail due to reflected light
and unless your camera is equipped with an anti redeye device then the fine
eye detail of a flashlight subject can also be lost.
Natural light can give a better representation of the colour of subject and
show the correct eye colour and natural reflections.
Even if a photo is like
the one on the left, I can use a little computer wizardry and turn this into
a usable picture to make the painting on the right possible .
With
natural light the eyes can become the window to their soul
